The PlayStation 5 Just Set a New Record

If you were able to get a PlayStation 5 since its launch last year, count yourself among the lucky ones, because finding the Sony next gen console is no easy task. The global chip shortage crisis has made it almost impossible for gamers to get their hands on the new console, and even though new stock is available every month, they tend to sell really fast.

With that in mind, you would think that Sony has not sold as many PS5s as they expected, or that maybe the console is underselling, compared to the PlayStation 4 in its first months. If that’s the case, you are totally wrong. According to the analyst firm NPD Group, the PlayStation 5 just made history, becoming the fastest selling console in the United States.

Even though the Japanese company has struggled to meet the overwhelming demand for its newest console, the PlayStation 5it has managed to sell more units than any other in the first five months of its launch. That’s a pretty impressive record, but there’s more. The Executive Director of the NPD Group, Mat Piscatella, also claimed that Sony’s console is the fastest selling piece of hardware within the U.S., beating gaming PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Are you the proud owner of a PlayStation 5? If not, chances are you won’t be able to have one for at least five more months, since Sony recently claimed that the console supply would be scarce through 2021. So, unless you are willing to pay a scalper three times the normal price for the console, there’s a long wait ahead of you.
